Customs

The Danish concept of hygge is one which has grown in popularity in recent years, as have the Nordic Noir genre of TV series and crime fiction books, not to mention New Nordic cuisine. The concept of hygge is about taking time out from the hustle and bustle of life to relax and enjoy time with family and friends, celebrate the small joys of life and slow down the pace of life. Hygge embodies the values of equality which is central to Danish life and society, which international surveys often rank as amongst the happiest in the world.

Electricity

The electricity current in Denmark is 220V, 50Hz. Denmark uses European-style two-pin plugs (Type C and F).

Getting around

Scandinavian Airlines, or SAS, operates several daily scheduled domestic flights departing from Copenhagen airport. An extensive rail network connects Copenhagen with towns across Denmark and also southern Sweden and long-distance bus routes also operate for those who prefer travelling by coach. Ferry services travel between Denmark’s many islands, with routes also connecting with Sweden, Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Public transport makes Copenhagen easy to get around, and the city is also extremely cycle-friendly. In fact, there are over 11,000km of sign-posted cycling routes which criss-cross the country, making it a safe way to get around.

Danish, with English also widely spoken.

Health

Danish medical facilities have similar standards to those in Australia, however emergency services can be limited in remote areas. You should ensure that you have suitable private travel health insurance to cover you for the duration of your trip.

Tipping

Normally tipping is not expected in Denmark, but it is common to round up the bill in restaurants and cafes or add 10% of the final bill for special service. If a service charge is included in your bill it will be clearly stated. It is not obligatory to give a tip to taxi drivers or hotel staff, but a modest tip of a few kronor is a nice gesture.

In the cities and main towns, larger shopping malls are open during the following hours:

Saturday & Sunday 10:00am – 4:00pm

Sweden is renowned for its high-quality porcelain products from brands such as Royal Copenhagen, as well as the clean and contemporary design style which influences Danish fashion, homewares and jewellery. You can also find uniquely Danish foods such as the popular salted liquorice which has a very acquired taste.
